This reminds me of The Surrender Experiment by Michael A. Singer. Having left cushy jobs in corporates, surrendering to the higher power, and simply trusting the process while seeing your peers excel in their careers while you seem to stagnate, are things that I still have much to work on.
Huge +1 to this. Nathalie/her writing has taught me so much about the importance of thoughtfully evaluating risk and ultimately choosing to take the right ones. Learning voraciously, trusting the process you’ve built, and believing in your ability to remain resilient regardless of the outcome is always worth it.
I would love that! I will follow up on this as soon as school starts back in September. The rest of the summer is a hodgepodge of camps and childcare madness, but absolutely will follow up!
Wow. This hit hard! I’m a recent GSB grad and went through what felt like a grueling job search for 9 months, thinking “wow, do my prior experiences and degree not matter?” after receiving final round rejections that simply didn’t make sense. I ended up in a role at the end of the 9 months, but it was completely wrong for me. I realize I completely abandoned myself and forgot to ask myself, “do I really want this? Or am I collecting another shiny star so the shame of the search can finally end?” My body called my BS for me - 6 weeks into the job I experienced my worst ever panic attack, and a week later ended up in the hospital with a health scare I’d never believe could happen to me. I resigned 3 months into the role. I’m sad it took a health scare for me to finally surrender to God and trust that my true desires and an aligned role exist for me. This time around, I feel lighter. I’ve given myself permission to live my life as if there’s nothing to fix, actually follow my interests, and allow kismet into my life.
Gloria, thank you for trusting me with this. I'm so glad your body called it before more of you had to pay the price, and I'm sorry it cost a hospital visit to hear it.
The GSB gives us many things, but it also trains us to collect shiny stars, and it's wild how many of us hit a reckoning 10 to 15 years out when the stars stop working. You just got yours a decade early. That's not a failure of the search. That's tuition paid ahead of schedule.
"Permission to live my life as if there's nothing to fix" is exactly the right perspective. I'm glad you're letting your inner compass drive now. It clearly knows things.
This really resonated with me. I have a question about hearing "you're being redirected." In hindsight, how literal was that? You eventually took a job that felt like a good fit for you as a person. Was this redirection a completely different industry or role than you were initially searching for? Or was the redirection simply to pause the way you were searching until something more authentic came to you without force? I too feel I am being redirected but the confusion around not knowing which path to pursue and how to spend my limited time is agonizing. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.

It’s such an excellent read, and all of it is much easier said than done. But to me, surrendering is ultimately worth it.
It is indeed, and your writing brought it back to my mind, and I thank you for that
